DESCRIBES TYPES OF IDEOLOGIES WOVEN INTO VIOLENCE BY GROUPS, EXPLORES THE ARGUMENTS USED TO JUSTIFY VIOLENCE IN EACH TYPE, AND ILLUSTRATES THE APPLICATION OF THESE JUSTIFICATIONS IN CONCRETE POLITICAL PROCESSES.
Abstract
IDEOLOGIES WHICH JUSTIFY VIOLENCE ARE THE LEGITIMIST, WHICH SEES VIOLENCE AS ESSENTIAL TO PRESERVING THE APPROVED ORDER FROM DISSOLUTION, EXPANISIONIST, WHICH JUSTIFIES THE DOMINATION OF ONE GROUP OVER OTHERS THROUGH VIOLENCE, PLURALIST, WHICH JUSTIFIES FORCE TO ACHIEVE SELF-DETERMINATION, AND INTRINSIC, WHICH TREATS VIOLENCE AS A COMPONENT OF LIFE-STYLES. THE INTENT OF THE PRESENTATION IS TO EXPOSE RATIONALES FOR VIOLENCE IN A COMPARATIVE CONTEXT SO AS TO REVEAL THE RELATIVITIES AND SITUATIONAL CHARACTER OF SANCTIONED VIOLENCE AND NONVIOLENCE.
