The Idaho Department of Law Enforcement set up a physical fitness program for the entire department.
Abstract
Program goals were set by a committee of representatives from each departmental division and bureau. The basic goal is to assist employees in becoming and staying physically fit throughout their careers and throughout their careers and lifetimes. More specifically, the program is designed to increase cardiorespiratory endurance, dynamic strength, and flexibility. It also teaches employees how to maintain a lifetime exercise schedule. Corporations, utilities, and foundations throughout the State helped pay for evaluation equipment, initial instructor training, and the compilation of a 95-page fitness manual. After fitness instructors were trained, the program was implemented first at the administrative level, then at the field level. The program is currently voluntary but will eventually become mandatory for commissioned employees. Analysis of the physiological data shows a steady, significant increase in the aerobic capabilities of Idaho officers. Tabular data showing officers' improvement in physical fitness are provided.
