Annotation

Military components of the shock incarceration program at the Lakeview Shock Incarceration Correctional Facility in Brocton, New York, teach inmates how to listen and think for themselves.

Abstract

The primary goal is to provide effective educational programming that teaches inmates how to think for themselves, solve problems, and take responsibility for their lives. A "drama triangle" is used to illustrate the importance of helping boot camp inmates think for themselves. The triangle includes persecutors, rescuers, and victims, and the idea is to help boot camp inmates get off the triangle by creating good citizens. Good citizens are created by encouraging vision and life skills and by adhering to a balance of education, treatment, and discipline. Physical training should be designed to build confidence and fitness, and counselors, drill instructors, and other boot camp personnel should challenge inmates to think before they act. The program at the Lakeview Shock Incarceration Correctional Facility is based on the premise that inmates will always take orders if they do not take responsibility for their lives.
