RELEVANCE OF PSYCHOLOGICAL DATA IN PREDICTING PAROLE SUCCESS AND RELEVANCE OF TEST RESULTS TO GROUPS OF BLACKS AND GROUPS OF WHITES.
Abstract
A RANDOM SAMPLE OF 100 BOYS INITIALLY COMMITTED IN 1967 WAS SELECTED FOR THIS PHASE OF THE PAROLE PREDICTION STUDY. STATISTICAL TESTS WERE USED TO MEASURE THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN PAROLE SUCCESS AND VARIABLES SUCH AS AGE OF COMMITMENT, NUMBER OF PRECOMMITMENT OFFENSES, INSTITUTIONAL ADJUSTMENT WHILE INCARCERATED AND THE ANXIETY AND EMOTIONAL INSTABILITY NOTED BY PSYCHOLOGISTS AT THE RECEPTION AND DIAGNOSTIC CENTER. THE RESULTS SHOW THAT AGE AT COMMITMENT IS THE BEST SINGLE PREDICTOR OF PAROLE SUCCESS FOLLOWED BY INSTITUTIONAL ADJUSTMENT. INSTITUTIONAL ADJUSTMENT AND THE NUMBER OF PRECOMMITMENT OFFENSES WERE HIGHLY CORRELATED WITH PAROLE SUCCESS. FOR REPORTS ONE AND THREE. SEE NCJ-12789 AND 12788 RESPECTIVELY.
