STUDIES THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN SOME VARIABLES RELATING TO INCARCERATION AND PAROLE SUCCESS OR FAILURE AMONG MALE JUVENILES INSTITUTIONALIZED IN ILLINOIS DURING 1967.
Abstract
THIS PHASE OF THE STUDY COLLECTED DATA ON A NEW RANDOM SAMPLE OF 100 YOUTHS INITIALLY COMMITTED IN 1967. STATISTICAL TESTS WERE CONDUCTED TO MEASURE THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN PAROLE SUCCESS AND VARIABLES SUCH AS BOY'S AGE AT COMMITMENT, HIS NUMBER OF PRECOMMITMENT OFFENSES, HIS INSTITUTIONAL ADJUSTMENT WHILE INCARCERATED, THE JUVENILE FACILITY HE WAS ASSIGNED TO, AND THE SOURCE OF HIS PARENTS' INCOME. AGE AT COMMITMENT EMERGED AS THE SINGLE BEST PREDICTOR OF PAROLE SUCCESS. GOOD ADJUSTMENT WHILE AT THE INSTITUTION AND FEWER PREVIOUS OFFENSES PROVED TO BE POSITIVELY RELATED TO PAROLE SUCCESS. GOOD RESULTS ON THE STANFORD ACHIEVEMENT TEST WERE ALSO POSITIVELY CORRELATED WITH PAROLE SUCCESS OR FAILURE. FOR REPORTS ONE AND THREE, SEE NCJ-12789 AND NCJ-12787 RESPECTIVELY.
