Tabular data on sentences imposed, lengths of stay, and sentencing impact considerations are presented in this 1980 annual report from the Illinois Department of Corrections.
Abstract
The average sentence imposed for misdemeanants has remained nearly constant, from 7.8 months in 1976 to 8.4 months in 1980. For 1980, 52.3 percent of determinant sentences received a sentence of 1 to 3 years, and 75 percent received less than a 7-year sentence. Under indeterminate statutes, Cook County has given slightly shorter prison terms when compared to the other counties. Under determinate sentencing, sentencing disparities among the counties are lessening. Length of determinate sentences imposed on white and nonwhite offenders shows no discernible pattern or differences. The overall length of stay for adult felons has remained around 2.5 years from 1976-1980. The trend in average length of stay for indeterminate sentences released in 1978 and 1979 was toward longer prison stays. A steady increase has occurred in new felony admissions since 1973. This trend began 5 years prior to the inception of determinate sentencing. (Author summary modified)
