This human services plan presents a discussion of the major issues facing the Illinois Department of Corrections in 1987.
Abstract
As has been the case throughout the history of corrections, the most crucial issue remains the management of the inmate population, the maintenance of staff morale, and the provision of mandated and support services to the correctional population. Specific issues include maintenance of control over the State's four maximum-security institutions, providing community correctional center opportunities for long-term offenders, and providing effective community supervision. In addition, the department is concerned with providing adequate mental health services and community support to juveniles. Finally, in the area of administration, efforts will aim at maintaining general office productivity through automation. The procedure for public review and amendment of the plan is included.
