REVIEW OF PRISON REFORMS IN ILLINOIS IN THE TWO YEARS FOLLOWING THE CREATION OF THE STATE'S DEPARTMENT OF CORRECTIONS IN 1970.
Abstract
PRIOR TO 1970, THE CORRECTIONAL FOCUS IN ILLINOIS WAS BASED UPON A LIMITED, SECURITY-ORIENTED PROGRAM WHICH OFFERED LITTLE IN THE WAY OF REHABILITATION FOR JUVENILE AND ADULT OFFENDERS. THE NEW LEGISLATION IS EXAMINED AS WELL AS PRISON RULES AND REGULATIONS, TREATMENT PROGRAMS, AND COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT INSTITUTED DURING THE PERIOD BETWEEN 1970 AND 1972. THE PROVISIONS OF THE UNIFIED CODE OF CORRECTIONS, ADOPTED IN JULY 1972, ARE ALSO OUTLINED.
