Abstract
THE MANUAL FOCUSES ON CHARACTERISTICS AND SPECIAL PROBLEMS OF YOUTH, THE ATTITUDES THESE PROBLEMS HAVE FOSTERED, AND THE DELINQUENCY PROBLEM THAT HAS SPAWNED THEREFROM. POLICE JUVENILE PROCEDURES ARE PRESENTED, INCLUDING QUESTIONING JUVENILES, TAKING JUVENILES INTO CUSTODY, DETENTION, JUVENILE RECORDS AND REPORTS, AND POLICE DISCRETION EXERCISED IN THE JUVENILE JUSTICE AREA. OPERATIONAL FORMS AND PROCEDURES THAT HAVE BEEN USED WITH SUCCESS ARE PROVIDED, AS IS A DIRECTORY OF ILLINOIS STATE SERVICES FOR CHILDREN AND YOUTH. APPENDED ARE A SUMMARY OF LAWS AFFECTING JUVENILES, A SUGGESTED BOOK LIST FOR YOUTH OFFICERS, A LISTING OF AVAILABLE YOUTH OFFICER TRAINING COURSES, AND A TRAINING SEMINAR FOR JUVENILE POLICE OFFICERS.
