With the increase in violent crimes committed in the U.S., the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has made related law enforcement a national priority. FBI investigations of violent crimes are handled primarily through the Violent Crimes and Major Offenders Program (VCMOP), but may involve other sections as well.
Abstract
The objective of the Violent Crimes Subprogram is to preserve human life through prompt and effective investigations into violent crimes including kidnapping, assault or assassination of leading government officials, extortion, child sexual exploitation, bank robbery, crimes aboard aircraft, and drug-related homicides. The Fugitive Subprogram is responsible for locating and apprehending individuals wanted in connection with substantive FBI investigations as well as those for whom unlawful flight warrants have been obtained. The FBI works to reduce the personal and tax dollar impact of crimes committed against government property and goods through its Government Reservation Crimes Subprogram. The agency addresses incidents involving theft or destruction or property through the Interstate Theft Subprogram. Violent crimes may also be dealt with under the auspices of other specialized investigative units including the Organized Crime Program, Drug Program, Asian Organized Crime Program, and Civil Rights Program. Other FBI initiatives to address violent crimes include the National Center for the Analysis of Violent Crime and work performed in the FBI Laboratory and Identification Divisions.
