Local implementation of the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) resolution recommending better police-private security liaison in Dade County, Fla., is reviewed.
Abstract
In February 1983, representatives of the Miami Chapter of the American Society for Industrial Security, International (ASIS) were appointed to coordinate the development of formal private security liaison within the Metro-Dade Police Department, in accordance with the IACP resolution. Later meetings between police and security personnel focused on the formal liaison process, and several pilot projects were inaugurated to enhance liaison. These included the addition of a security module for recruit training at the Southeast Florida Institute of Criminal Justice, which has since become a permanent part of the curriculum. An assessment center, operated in conjunction with the institute, contributed to the liaison process by designing for security officers an assessment process which uses the Miami-Dade College security operation as a prototype. In October 1983, a formal liaison officer was appointed, and a law enforcement liaison committee was established within the Miami Chapter of ASIS. Several police-security seminars are being planned to examine such topics as industrial espionage and computer crime. Security briefings will be held at Metro-Dade police command meetings, and 'The Journal of Security Administration' has been distributed to selected supervisors. The future of increased police-private security liaison in Dade County looks promising. Other police agencies are encouraged to implement the IACP resolution.
