Abstract
THESE READINGS REPRESENT THE DIVERSITY OF DECISIONS AND THEIR IMPACT ON THE CONGRESS, PRESIDENT, STATE AND LOCAL GOVERNMENTS, THE LEGAL SYSTEM, AND PUBLIC OPINION. THERE IS ALSO A SECTION DEALING WITH THE METHODOLOGICAL AND THEORETICAL PROBLEMS OF MEASURING IMPACT. INCLUDED IN THE READINGS ARE A LOOK AT TWO PRESIDENTIAL ATTEMPTS TO ALTER THE NATURE OF THE COURT, AN EXAMPLE OF THE COURT'S 'SELF-CORRECTING' MECHANISMS AND A DISCUSSION OF THE COURT'S OVERALL EFFECTIVENESS IN RESISTING POPULAR MAJORITIES. THE DECISIONS DISCUSSED INCLUDE OBSCENITY RULINGS, JUVENILES RIGHTS, AND THE RIGHT TO COUNSEL.
