RECOMMENDATIONS ON PROGRAM STAFF, EXERCISE PROGRAMS, AND FACILITIES FOR AN AEROBICS CONDITIONING PROGRAM TO IMPROVE THE PHYSICAL AND MENTAL HEALTH OF PRISON INMATES.
Abstract
AEROBIC CONDITIONING PROGRAMS REFER TO A VARIETY OF EXERCISES THAT STIMULATE HEART AND LUNG ACTIVITY FOR A PERIOD OF TIME SUFFICIENTLY LONG TO PRODUCE BENEFICIAL CHANGES IN THE BODY. TYPICAL AEROBIC EXERCISES ARE ENDURANCE TYPE ACTIVITIES INCLUDING JOGGING, RUNNING, SWIMMING, AND CYCLING. RESULTS FROM PREVIOUS STUDIES ON INMATES SUGGEST THAT EXERCISE SHOULD BE CONSIDERED AS PART OF THE TOTAL REHABILITATIVE PROCESS. TO SUPPLY THIS NEEDED EXERCISE, THIS ARTICLE SUGGESTS AN AEROBICS CONDITIONING PROGRAM. TO AID IN THE IMPLEMENTATION OF SUCH PROGRAMS IN CORRECTIONAL FACILITIES, THIS ARTICLE OUTLINES THE TYPE OF PERSONNEL NECESSARY FOR OPERATING AN AEROBICS PROGRAM; THE PROCEDURES FOR EVALUATING THE FITNESS OF INMATES; THE EXERCISE PRINCIPLES TO BE USED; AND THE TYPES OF FACILITIES AND EQUIPMENT NEEDED FOR SUCH A PROGRAM.
