THE DIFFERENT APPROACHES TAKEN WITH RESPECT TO JUVENILES BY THE JUVENILE PROBATION OFFICER AND POLICE OFFICER WORKING WITH JUVENILES ARE EXPLAINED, AND THE JOB-RELATED PROBLEMS OF BOTH THESE GROUPS ARE EXPLORED.
Abstract
THE AUTHOR STATES THAT CONFLICTING ISSUES IN JUVENILE WORK REVOLVE AROUND A BASIC DILEMMA IN POLICE AND PROBATION WORK - THE USE OF PUNISHMENT-ORIENTED VIEWS WITH DIFFICULT JUVENILES, AND THE CLINICAL APPROACH TO JUVENILES ADVOCATED IN JUVENILE JUSTICE THEORY. THE PROFESSIONAL ORIENTATIONS OF BOTH THE POLICE AND THE PROBATION OFFICER ARE DESCRIBED. IT IS STATED THAT, PROFESSIONALLY, THE POLICE ARE MORE ORIENTED TO SOCIAL CONTROL, WHILE PROBATION OFFICERS STRESS THE REHABILITATION MODEL OF JUVENILE JUSTICE. PROFESSIONAL PROBLEMS FOR BOTH THESE GROUPS, SUCH AS LACK OF OPPORTUNITIES FOR PROMOTION AND LOW PAY SCALE ARE BRIEFLY DISCUSSED IN RELATION TO ON-THE-JOB ATTITUDES. FINALLY, THE SYSTEMS USED BY PROBATION AND POLICE OFFICERS TO CLASSIFY AND DEAL WITH JUVENILE OFFENDERS IS EXPLAINED.
