This report describes the initiatives taken by governmental agencies in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada in response to 24 of the recommendations made in 1984 by Canadian ministers at all levels of government that focus on ways of addressing the problem of wife beating.
Abstract
Actions taken include giving police clear instructions on the procedure for handling cases of wife battering, distribution of an information pamphlet to both the public and professionals, data collection regarding family violence, meetings by the Interdepartmental Committee on Wife Battering, and circulation of the government's policy to all offices of the Department of Social Services. Additional initiatives include research regarding a special program for batterers, inservice training for social workers, support for transition houses, development of a curriculum for a family living course for high schools, and development of awareness programs for teaching staff.
