This report describes the initiatives taken by governmental agencies in Nova Scotia, Canada in response to 14 recommendations made in 1984 by Canadian ministers at all levels of government that focus on ways of addressing the problem of wife beating.
Abstract
Actions taken include issuing a new directive to provincial police regarding the laying of charges in cases of family violence, providing courses in human relations and crisis intervention, making cost-sharing arrangements for transition housing, and providing medium-term housing. Additional actions included data collection regarding the prevalence of wife battering and the circumstances surrounding it, development and funding for a public awareness campaign, providing information to emergency room personnel, and provision of inservice training for community health nurses.
