This document reports on the number of individuals sentenced to death for crimes committed while under age 18 from January 1, 1982 through February 1, 1989.
Abstract
Juvenile death sentences numbered 11 in 1982, 9 in 1983, 6 in 1984, 6 in 1985, 7 in 1986, 2 in 1987, and 3 in 1988. During this period, juvenile death sentences represented 1 to 2 percent of the total death sentences handed down each year. As of February 1, 1989, no new juvenile death sentences had been imposed in the United States for the year 1989 and 27 individuals were serving death sentences for crimes committed while under age 18. The document provides information on all juvenile death sentence cases handed down from January 1982 to February 1, 1989. Information provided on each case includes the defendant's name, race, state where tried and sentenced, and current legal status.
