Abstract
THIS IS THE ENGLISH-LANGUAGE VERSION OF A SIMPLE BOOKLET PREPARED TO HELP THE OFFENDER UNDERSTAND THE DUTCH PRISON SYSTEM. IT EXPLAINS THAT SELECTION FOR AN INSTITUTION TAKES INTO ACCOUNT AGE, LENGTH OF SENTENCE, AND WHETHER THE PERSON CONCERNED WAS ALREADY IN CUSTODY WHEN SENTENCED. DISTINCTIONS ARE MADE BETWEEN PERSONS AGED 18 TO 23 AND THOSE OVER 23; THE BORDERLINE BETWEEN SHORT TERM AND LONG TERM SENTENCES IS 5 MONTHS FOR YOUNG OFFENDERS (AGE 18-23) AND 6 MONTHS FOR ADULTS. THE SENTENCE STARTS FROM THE COMMENCEMENT OF ANY PRELIMINARY DETENTION. FIGURES ILLUSTRATE THE INTERACTION OF THESE FACTORS AND THE PENAL INSTITUTIONS TO WHICH ADULTS AND YOUNG PERSONS MAY BE SENT. THE TEXT BRIEFLY DESCRIBES THE SYSTEM AND INDICATES THE INSTITUTIONS TO WHICH AN OFFENDER IS LIKELY TO BE COMMITTED UNDER VARYING SETS OF CIRCUMSTANCES. IN A NUMBER OF HOUSES OF DETENTION, SHORT TERMS OF IMPRISONMENT MAY BE SERVED PIECEMEAL, FOR INSTANCE AT WEEKENDS. THE REMAND HOUSES AT WHICH THESE 'WEEKEND SENTENCES' ARE POSSIBLE ARE LISTED. (GLR)
