COMMUNITY COLLEGE INVOLVEMENT IN IMPROVING CORRECTIONAL MANPOWER, AND SUGGESTED STANDARDS FOR IMPROVING TRAINING AND EDUCATION PROGRAMS.
Abstract
THIS REPORT REFLECTS THE CONCERNS AND VIEWS EXPRESSED IN A SERIES OF STATE-LEVEL MEETINGS AND INTER-REGIONAL CONFERENCES SPONSORED JOINTLY BY THE AACJC AND THE AMERICAN BAR ASSOCIATION COMMISSION ON CORRECTIONAL FACILITIES AND SERVICES. A DISCUSSION OF CORRECTIONAL OFFICER CHARACTERISTICS, DUTIES, AND NECESSARY COMPETENCIES, SERVES AS THE BASIS FOR IDENTIFYING EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS. FACTORS INFLUENCING CORRECTIONS EDUCATION, SUCH AS THE POSTURE OF CORRECTIONS AGENCIES, FUNDING PRIORITIES, SENSITIVITY OF STATE CRIMINAL JUSTICE PLANNERS, AND INTERNAL MAKEUP OF THE COLLEGES ARE REVIEWED. SEVERAL ALTERNATIVE APPROACHES TO CORRECTIONAL EDUCATION ARE ANALYZED AND SAMPLE CURRICULA ARE PRESENTED. A CHAPTER IS DEVOTED TO SUGGESTED STANDARDS FOR STATE PLANNING, THE CAREER STRUCTURE, INCENTIVES TO LINE OFFICERS, CURRICULUM MATTERS, AND LEGISLATION. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT MODIFIED)
