INCIDENCE OF THE XYY AND XXY CHROMOSOMAL DEFECTS IN CONVICTED FELONS ADMITTED TO THE IOWA SECURITY FACILITY IS INVESTIGATED USING THE HYPOTHESIS THAT THE INCIDENCE WOULD BE GREATER THAN THAT FOR THE GENERAL POPULATION.
Abstract
A SAMPLE OF 300 REFERRALS TO THE STATE MEDICAL FACILITY WAS STUDIED; 253 INDIVIDUALS WERE CONVICTED FELONS AND THE OTHER 47 PERSONS WERE SUBJECTS WITH ORGANIC BRAIN DAMAGE, MENTAL RETARDATION, OR UNCONVICTED FELONS REFERRED TO THE HOSPITAL BY THE COURT FOR TREATMENT OR EVALUATION. THE USUAL METHODS OF CELL HARVEST AND CHROMOSOME PREPARATION FROM BLOOD WERE USED AND GIEMSA STAINED METAPHASE PLATES WERE EXAMINED AND PHOTOGRAPHED UNDER BRIGHT FIELD MICROSCOPY. THOSE SUBJECTS WITH ANEUPLOID WERE KARYOTYPED AND THE CHROMOSOME ABERRATION CHARACTERIZED. METAPHASE PLATES FROM THE ANEUPLOID SUBJECTS WERE ALSO STAINED WITH QUINACRINE MUSTARD AND EXAMINED UNDER FLUORESCENCE MICROSCOPY FOR UNUSUAL BANDING PATTERNS. RESULTS SHOW ONLY ONE 47,XYY AND TWO 47,XXY INDIVIDUALS AMONG THE 253 FELONS. THE KARYOTYPE OF THESE THREE SUBJECTS WERE ABNORMAL ONLY BECAUSE THEY HAD AN EXTRA X OR Y CHROMOSOME WITH NO CHROMATOID BREAKS, ISOCHROMOSOMES, INVERSIONS, TRANSLOCATIONS, OR DELETIONS. AN ASSOCIATION BETWEEN XYY AND XXY INDIVIDUALS AND AGGRESSIVE OR ANTISOCIAL BEHAVIOR IS NOT SUPPORTED BY THESE FINDINGS. CASE HISTORIES OF THE THREE SUBJECTS WITH ABNORMAL CHROMOSOME KARYOTYPES ARE PRESENTED AS WELL AS TABULAR DATA AND REFERENCES. (DAG)
