THIS EXPOSE DEALS WITH THE INCIDENCE, CAUSES, TREATMENT, AND INVESTIGATION OF INDECENT EXPOSURE BY BOTH MALES AND FEMALES, AND WITH THE EFFECTS OF THIS CRIME ON BOTH ITS VICTIMS AND SOCIETY.
Abstract
ONE-THIRD OF ALL SEX OFFENSES REPORTED TO THE POLICE ARE ACTS OF INDECENT EXPOSURE. YET MEN WHO COMMIT THIS OFFENSE DO NOT ALWAYS RECEIVE THE ATTENTION THEY DESERVE FOR A PROBLEM WHICH MAY HAVE DEVASTATING EFFECTS ON THEIR PERSONAL LIVES. HARSH PUNISHMENT OR JUDICIAL INDIFFERENCE WITH MINOR SANCTIONS WHICH DO NOT ALTER THEIR BEHAVIOR IS TOO OFTEN THEIR FATE. THIS BOOK IS BASED NOT ONLY UPON A STUDY OF OFFENDERS AND THEIR VICTIMS, BUT ALSO UPON ANALYSIS OF DENVER POLICE DEPARTMENT RECORDS ON 200 CONSECUTIVE REPORTS OF INDECENT EXPOSURE. THE MODUS OPERANDI OF THIS OFFENSE IS REVIEWED AND THE RESPONSE OF VICTIMS IS OUTLINED. CONTRARY TO GENERAL BELIEF THAT THE MAN WHO EXPOSES HIMSELF IS NOT DANGEROUS, THIS STUDY SHOWS THAT SOME OFFENDERS ALSO COMMIT RAPE, AGGRAVATED ROBBERY AND CRIMINAL HOMICIDE. ADVICE IS PROVIDED ON THE EVALUATION OF DANGEROUSNESS. WHY DO MEN EXPOSE THEMSELVES? WHERE AND WHEN DO THEY DO IT? WHAT ARE THEIR METHODS OF COMMITTING THIS OFFENSE? HOW DO THEY SELECT THEIR VICTIMS? WHAT OTHER SEX OFFENSES ARE COMMONLY ASSOCIATED WITH INDECENT EXPOSURE? HOW DO WOMEN AND CHILDREN RESPOND TO THIS ACT? PSYCHOLOGICAL ASPECTS OF EXHIBITIONISM RECEIVE PARTICULAR ATTENTION AND ONE CHAPTER CONSIDERS THE MOTHERS OF EXHIBITIONISTS AND THEIR ROLE IN PROMOTING THIS UNUSUAL BEHAVIOR. POLICE RAIDS ON NUDIST CAMPS, THE CRIMINAL INVESTIGATION OF INDECENT EXPOSURE, LEGAL ASPECTS OF THIS PROBLEM, SEXUAL PSYCHOPATH LAWS AND THE PUNISHMENT OF OFFENDERS ARE REVIEWED. A CONCLUDING CHAPTER ON TREATMENT INCLUDES RECENT ADVANCES IN BEHAVIOR THERAPY. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT) (SNI ABSTRACT)
