Abstract
Highlights of the work of the Indian Alcohol & Substance Abuse Program (IASAP) in 2008 include the following: in fiscal year 2008, the Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA) awarded 11 grants to tribes totaling $3.2 million; the BJA funds were used to develop and enhance multi-jurisdictional and multi-disciplinary working groups and tasks forces, reduce drug- and alcohol-related crime and injuries, and apprehend and prosecute smugglers and dealers of methamphetamine; and over 4,000 personnel were able to receive training or onsite technical assistance through funding from IASAP, while over 1,200 non-grantee professionals received scholarships to attend training. Additional information in the fact sheet lists current IASAP grant recipients for the years 2005 through 2008, past grant recipients for 2002 through 2004, and a list of strategies for addressing alcohol abuse. The strategies for addressing alcohol abuse presented in four categories: multi-disciplinary strategies, community outreach, law enforcement strategies, and tribal court strategies.
