This executive summary of the calendar-year 2001 Indiana Judicial Report summarizes a compilation of statistical data on the workload and related judicial functions of the Indiana judicial system.
Abstract
The information was compiled from Quarterly Case Status Reports filed with the Division of State Court Administration by each trial court. In addition, fiscal information was obtained from reports filed by the trial courts. Workload data encompass the Indiana Supreme Court, the Court of Appeals, the Tax Court, and trial courts. The 1,799,280 new cases filed in 2001 constituted an increase of 35.2 percent over a 1-year period. The highest rate of increase occurred in civil plenary cases, which increased by 14.1 percent from 2000. By far the largest number of cases filed involved infractions, with over three-quarters of a million cases. Following infractions were small claims (305,776) and misdemeanors (201,639). All Indiana courts disposed of 1,775,010 cases. The fiscal data show an overall increase in revenues and expenditures for 2001. Total expenditures by the counties, State, and local units on the operation of the judicial system increased 6.2 percent from 2000. The total revenues generated by the operation of all the courts increased 7 percent from 2000 levels. The counties spent $174,252,502 on the operation of the trial courts, and all courts generated $153,686,759 during 2001. Extensive tables
