This Volume II of the Indiana Judicial Service Report presents caseload information for every trial court in Indiana, with subtotals for each county.
Abstract
The caseload data indicate that 1,784,359 new cases were filed in 2006, a 6.04-percent increase from 2005. The number of new cases filed in all Indiana courts in 2006 was 20.05-percent greater than the number filed in 1997. The most significant increase in new filings occurred in the category of juvenile miscellaneous cases, which increased by 25.28 percent from 2005. Other notable increases occurred in mortgage foreclosure (19.78 percent); ordinance violations (18.56 percent); juvenile termination of parental rights (14.79 percent); miscellaneous criminal (14.22 percent); and paternity (12.99 percent). The most significant decrease in new filings occurred in the case category of children in need of supervision, which showed a 10.18-percent decrease. Other notable decreases occurred in postconviction relief (9.48-percent decline); trusts (6.33-percent decline); estates (4.64-percent decline); and small claims (4.49-percent decline). Of the criminal, juvenile, civil, and probate/adoption case categories, the criminal category composed 65.4 percent of total cases filed in 2006. The most significant change from 2005 new filings was in the criminal category (9.21-percent increase). The number of cases disposed in all Indiana courts in 2006 was 17.60 percent greater than the number disposed in 1997. The most significant increase in case dispositions was in the category of miscellaneous criminal cases, which saw a 34.03-percent increase from 2005. Of the criminal, juvenile, civil, and probate/adoption case categories, the criminal category constituted 66.15 percent of total cases disposed in 2006. Of the aforementioned case categories, the juvenile category showed the most significant change, i.e., a 10.55-percent increase from 2005 dispositions. Of the 1,728,008 dispositions in 2006, 76.47 percent were disposed in Courts of Record. This volume also indicates the method of case disposition in each court, the amount of time that additional judicial officers served in a given court, and other judicial activities. Tables and graphs
