Abstract
The medical information provided is current as of December 1987. The procedures apply to the searching of persons and property, the handling of hypodermic needles or other sharp items, exposure to infections disease, cleaning and contamination procedures, housekeeping and waste disposal, and supplied. An introduction explains the nature and transmission of AIDS and the basic recommendations of the Centers for Disease Control of the United States Public Health Service. The subsequent sections note that accident needle sticks represent the most common potential exposure in law enforcement and state that police officers should assume that every subject to be searched may possess a small sharp object. The guidelines also note that soiled clothing and floors and other environmental surfaces are not usually associated with the transmission of infections.
