THIS STUDY INVESTIGATED THE IMPACT OF AUXILIARY SOURCES OF INFORMATION ON DIAGNOSTIC ACCURACY IN IDENTIFYING TRUTHFUL AND DECEPTIVE SUBJECTS BY MEANS OF POLYGRAPH TESTS.
Abstract
THE DATA USED IN THIS STUDY CONSISTED OF 20 SETS OF POLYGRAPH RECORDS, OF WHICH TEN WERE THOSE OF VERIFIED TRUTHFUL SUBJECTS AND TEN WERE OF VERIFIED UNTRUTHFUL SUBJECTS. SIX POLYGRAPH OPERATORS REVIEWED THESE RECORDS UNDER TWO SETS OF CONDITIONS: 1) USING DATA FROM THE POLYGRAPH RECORDS ALONE, AND 2) USING THE POLYGRAPH DATA AND SUCH RELEVANT INFORMATION AS CASE HISTORY, SUBJECT DATA, VERBAL AND NONVERBAL BEHAVIOR SYMPTOMS, AND RELEVANT TEST QUESTIONS. THE EXAMINERS OBTAINED AN AVERAGE ACCURACY OF 88.33 PERCENT WITH THE POLYGRAPH RECORDS ALONE. WHEN THE AUXILIARY SOURCES OF INFORMATION WERE USED, THEIR AVERAGE ACCURACY INCREASED TO 92.50 PERCENT.
