This study investigated the influence of multiple sex partners and use of contraceptives on HIV/AIDS risk behavior of the Nigerian Police.
Abstract
Findings from the study show that members of the Nigeria Police do engage in extra-marital affairs. Participants of the study were found to be vulnerable to sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) and HIV due to their unprotected sex and their carefree behavioral attitudes to the use of contraceptives. Gender differences were found to be significant; with men more vulnerable to STDs. Counseling implications for the Nigeria Police are discussed. There are few studies on the Nigeria Police. In addition, researchers have made little or no efforts in investigating police sexual and health-related problems. This study sought to answer four research questions: (1) what is the prevalence of multiple sex partners among the police in Nigeria; (2) what is the prevalence of contraceptive use among the police in Nigeria; (3) what is the relationship between the influence of multiple sex partners and use of contraceptives among the police in Nigeria; and (4) what is the relationship between the influence of multiple sex partners and the use of contraceptives on the sexual behaviors of the police in Nigeria? The study sample consisted of 996 officers and men of Nigeria Police (609 married and 387 not married) randomly sampled from the population of Oyo State Police Command. Tables and references
