THE AUTHOR DISCUSSES THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN FORMAL AND INFORMAL CONTROL FOR BEHAVIOR MODIFICATION.
Abstract
WHILE REPORTING THAT INFORMAL SOCIAL CONTROL BY PRIMARY AND SECONDARY GROUPS MAY BE A MAJOR FORCE IN BEHAVIOR MODIFICATION, THE AUTHOR STATES THAT THE SOCIAL CONTROL EXERTED BY ONE INDIVIDUAL OVER ANOTHER IS ALSO AN IMPORTANT SOCIALIZING FORCE. INTERPERSONAL RELATIONSHIPS THAT IMPLY SOLIDARITY, FEELINGS OF INVOLVEMENT, AND FRIENDSHIP ARE IMPORTANT IN POSITIVELY MODIFYING BEHAVIOR, AS ARE THOSE RELATIONSHIPS THAT IMPLY THE OPPOSITE. THE SOCIALIZATION PROCESS OFTEN PROVES UNSUCCESSFUL PRECISELY BECAUSE INFORMAL SOCIAL CONTROLS CANNOT ACCOUNT FOR VARIABLES BEYOND THEIR SCOPE. IDEOLOGY, LAW, POLITICAL FACTORS, AS WELL AS SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY ALL EXERT INFLUENCES ON INFORMAL SOCIAL CONTROLS. THE RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN THESE ARE OFTEN COMPLEX AND NEED FURTHER STUDY.
