This report discusses the Pepperdine University - National School Safety Center's accomplishments since it opened for business in June 1984 under an Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention grant, its fiscal management and allegations made by former center staff, and plans for the center's second year.
Abstract
This review was based on interviews with U.S. Justice Department, Pepperdine, and current and former center officials as well as an examination of relevant documents. It concluded that the center director and chief counsel's management style and approach for accomplishing the grant's objectives led to confrontations with the staff. This ultimately resulted in an investigation by Pepperdine and a decision by the university to take a more active role in managing the center. First year funding totaled $2.1 million; second year funding is expected to be about $1.7 million. The center plans to use 47 percent fewer permanent staff and rely more on outside consultants. The center completed 75 percent of its workplan tasks scheduled for the first grant year. Additional findings are detailed. Tables are provided.
