This information pack for British citizens who have been imprisoned in Lima, Peru, provides guidance and information on the British Embassy's services and benefits available to British prisoners, as well as information on prison conditions/services and the Peruvian judicial system.

Abstract

The information pack first states the Embassy's role in interaction with the prisoner, i.e., "to make sure that you are treated properly and fairly in accordance with local regulations, and that you are treated no less favorably than other prisoners." The Embassy can answer questions regarding the prisoner's welfare and prison regulations, but the prisoner's lawyer or the court must be consulted about legal matters. The Embassy cannot get the prisoner out of prison, pay fines or bail, interfere with local judicial procedures, or investigate the crime at issue. The booklet then poses and answers the most common questions a prisoner might ask the Embassy, namely, who will know the prisoner has been detained, what the prisoner's family will be told, what the Embassy will do, and whether the prisoner will have a criminal record in the United Kingdom. Information is also provided on prisoner visits from family and friends while he or she is in prison, and prison conditions/services. Information on the Peruvian judicial system addresses such issues as the length of pretrial detention, provision for clemency or pardon, sentencing, appeals, procedures for release and deportation, and whether transfer to the United Kingdom is possible. Appended list of English-speaking lawyers, a list of private translators/interpreters, consent to disclose details of the case, and an expulsion order guide
