THIS PILOT STUDY OF LEGISLATION AND PRACTICE CONCERNS THE GATHERING AND USE OF DATA ON PRIVATE PERSONS BY THE POLICE IN THE NETHERLANDS.
Abstract
THE REPORT MENTIONS SEVERAL INSTANCES WHERE THE POLICE VOLUNTEERED INFORMATION TO UNAUTHORIZED PERSONS OR INSTITUTIONS, DAMAGING THE NAME AND POSITION OF PRIVATE CITIZENS. RECEIVERS OF THE INFORMATION FORM A VARIED GROUP, INCLUDING INSURANCE COMPANIES, LANDLORDS, HOUSING COMMITTEES, AND EMPLOYERS. THE TYPE OF INFORMATION GIVEN RANGES FROM 'KNOWN TO THE POLICE' TO 'HAS BEEN IN PRISON.' THERE IS GREAT DIVERSITY AMONG POLICE STATIONS IN REGISTRATION METHODS AS WELL AS IN THE SORT OF INFORMATION GATHERED.
