Abstract
A pattern of physically, sexually, and/or emotionally abusive behaviors used by one individual to assert power or maintain control over another in the context of an intimate or family relationship is the definition of domestic violence. This informational guide was designed to aid victims of domestic violence through the legal process. A victim of domestic violence experiences conflicting feelings and thoughts. The criminal justice system may also seem confusing and difficult to understand. This brochure provides victims with basic information and definitions to assist in understanding the process. Topics include: a safety plan, the types of assistance available to victims of domestic violence, protective orders, criminal warrants, appearing in court, preparing for court when a prosecutor is not present, taking safety measures when going to court, and compensation for victims of crime. The brochure contains a final section on commonly used terms.
