An overlooked audience for AIDS education programs consists of senior decision makers and board members of child welfare agencies.
Abstract
AIDS education for agency board members can be presented in five categories: an overview of AIDS focusing on the incidence of AIDS and demographic factors, psychosocial factors, issues of particular relevance to child welfare agencies, legal issues (service accessibility, personnel policies, confidentiality, program policy and procedures, training, insurance, and liability), and the response of particular agencies to the AIDS epidemic. Recommended educational strategies to employ with this audience include scheduling intensive seminars on management issues, using facilitators to explore attitudes toward the clients served and problems addressed by agency services, attending national conferences or regional seminars, providing specialized training to a few selected board members, and incorporating AIDS information at board meetings on a regular basis. 1 figure and 5 references
