This article examines young offender policy in current research and suggests topics for future development.
Abstract
Current research topics related to young offender policy include institutional versus non-institutional placement for treatment; multi-systemic therapy; cognitive-behavioral interventions; directed interventions toward violent, substance abusing and sex offending youths; and restorative justice programs. Issues for future development include: (1) protocols that enhance implementation of programs already shown to be effective, referred to in some venues as technology transfer; (2) emphasis on selected groups that have been largely overlooked in the literature, e.g., young girls, adolescent women, and very young offenders; and (3) replication studies to further validate interventions that have been effective in reducing offending.
