Following the end of the Civil War, Florida established its first State prison.
Abstract
The warden, a former Union Army officer, established a correctional education program. Due to a lack of funding and the end of Reconstructionism in 1878, the State prison was closed and its pioneering attempt at correctional education ended only to be restored after the creation of a new Florida State prison system in the early part of the twentieth century. The present-day Florida Department of Corrections is nationally recognized for its inmate education program and its commitment to inmate rehabilitation through education. 12 references.
