THE STATE OF INMATE EDUCATION IN THE U.S. AND EUROPE IS JUDGED TO BE GENERALLY WEAK, WITH SOME EXAMPLES OF EMERGING STRENGTH. SOME SUGGESTIONS ARE OFFERRED FOR IMPROVING THIS STATE OF AFFAIRS.
Abstract
THE AUTHOR RECOMMENDS THAT MOST OFFENDERS NOT BE IMPRISONED, BUT PLACED IN A COMMUNITY CORRECTIONAL SETTING WITH ACCESS TO A NUMBER OF PROFESSIONAL PERSONNEL WHO WILL ASSIST THEM IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF SKILLS NECESSARY TO SURVIVE WITHIN ACCEPTABLE SOCIAL NORMS. EDUCATORS WOULD COMPRISE A PART OF THIS PROFESSIONAL TEAM. HE SUGGESTS THAT MORE INMATE STUDENTS BE PLACED ON STUDY RELEASE TO SPEND TIME IN THE LOCAL HIGH SCHOOL OR COMMUNITY COLLEGE. HE FURTHER URGES THAT MORE VOCATIONAL PROGRAMS WITH MEMBERS OF KEY INDUSTRIES AS TRAINERS BE PROVIDED BOTH IN AND OUTSIDE INSTITUTIONS. VOLUNTEER TUTORING BY COMMUNITY RESIDENTS IS ALSO ENCOURAGED. THE AUTHOR ALSO SEES THE NEED FOR THE STATUS OF CORRECTIONAL EDUCATORS TO BE RAISED TO THE POINT THAT THEY ARE RECOGNIZED AS IMPORTANT COMPONENTS IN THE WORLD OF EDUCATION....RCB
