This report presents data about inmate escape incidents in New York Department of Correctional Services facilities during the years 1997 through 2001.

Abstract

According to the report, 36 inmates escaped from the custody of New York prisons during the 5 year period 1997 through 2001. Demographic information and legal history characteristics of escapees are presented in both narrative form and in tables. In some cases, the population of escaped inmates is compared to the general undercustody population of inmates. Of those inmates who escaped during this 5 year period, 31 percent were imprisoned for burglary, while only 9 percent of the undercustody population was imprisoned for burglary. Sixty-nine percent of escapees had served less than 3 years of their sentence at the time of their escape. Fifty-six percent of the escapees who escaped during 2001 were apprehended within 12 hours of their escape. Data is also offered on demographic information of escapees, prior adult criminal history of escapees, and facility security level where escapes took place.
