EXAMINATION OF RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN INMATES PERCEPTION OF INCENTIVES PROGRAM AND LEVELS OF PARTICIPATION IN OTHER PROGRAMS OFFERED BY THE PENITENTIARY.
Abstract
SUBJECTS COMPLETED A QUESTIONNAIRE DESIGNED TO MEASURE THEIR EVALUATION OF THE INCENTIVES PROGRAM, WHICH PROVIDES INMATES AN OPPORTUNITY TO EARN PRIVILEGES SUCH AS HIGHER PAY. THE OJECTIVE OF THIS STUDY WAS TO SEE WHETHER DIFFERENCES IN STAFF AND INMATE PERCEPTIONS OF THE INCENTIVES PROGRAM EXIST AND WHETHER THESE DIFFERENCES WERE RELATED TO THE LEVEL OF PARTICIPATION OF INMATES IN OTHER PENITENTIARY PROGRAMS. RESULTS STRONGLY CONFIRMED THE HYPOTHESIS THAT STAFF AND INMATES REPRESENT SEPARATE SUBCULTURES WITH DIFFERING PERCEPTIONS OF PENITENTIARY PROGRAMS. IN REGARDS TO A SECOND HYPOTHESIS THAT THERE WOULD BE A POSITIVE ASSOCIATION BETWEEN INMATE PARTICIPATION IN OTHER PENITENTIARY PROGRAMS AND THEIR EVALUATION OF THE INCENTIVE PROGRAM, SUPPORTING RESULTS WERE ONLY FOUND FOR THREE PROGRAMS. THE DATE FAILED TO SUPPORT THE THIRD HYPOTHESIS THAT PARTICIPATION IN OTHER PROGRAMS WOULD LEAD TO INMATES HAVING EVALUATIONS OF INCENTIVES PROGRAM THAT WERE SIMILAR TO THOSE OF STAFF.
