In calendar year 1993, 6,243 inmate incidents occurred in institutions and camps operated by the California Department of Corrections, a 25.3 increase over the total of 4,982 incidents in 1992.
Abstract
The rate of incidents increased from 5 in 1992 to 5.7 in 1993. Between 1984 and 1993, the rate of incidents steadily decreased from 12.7 in 1984 to 5.7 in 1993. Assaults accounted for 57.1 percent of all incidents, and assaults with a weapon accounted for 28.3 percent of all incidents. Assault incidents increased from 2,822 in 1992 to 3,563 in 1993. Drug incidents accounted for 18.3 percent of all incidents, with marijuana accounting for 60 percent of all incidents, opiates 26 percent and other drugs 13.9 percent. Drug incidents increased from 863 in 1992 to 1,141 in 1993. Eleven male inmates were fatally assaulted in 1993, an increase over the nine fatal assaults reported in 1992. The number of inmates stabbed to death decreased from 32 in 1972 to zero in 1993. The last fatal assault on staff occurred in 1985, although 1,416 nonfatal assaults on staff were recorded in 1993; 35.4 percent of these assaults involved the use of weapons by inmates. Assaults on staff increased from 1,188 in 1992 to 1,416 in 1993. The rate of inmate assaults on staff, however, steadily decreased from 1.7 per 100 average daily institution population in 1984 to 1.3 in 1993. 8 tables and 6 figures
