Abstract
The correctional system experienced 6,610 inmate incidents in 1996, a decline of 5.2 percent from 1994. The rate of incidents per 100 average daily population decreased from 5.9 in 1994 to 5.3 in 1995. This rate had steadily decreased from 9.6 to 4.3 in 1991 and then increased slightly. Assault and battery incidents accounted for 60.8 percent of the incidents. Those involving a weapon accounted for 23.6 percent of the incidents; those not involving a weapon accounted for 37.2 percent of the incidents. Drug incidents accounted for 16.7 percent of the total incidents. More than half the drug incidents involved marijuana. Five inmates were fatally attacked in 1995, compared to 13 in 1994. The State experienced 1,309 incidents involving assault and battery on staff, including 600 incidents that involved the use of weapons. Staff experienced 1,603 assaults in 1994. Figures and tables
