BASED ON DATA FROM A 1968 INMATE RIOT AT THE LEBANON, OHIO, CORRECTIONAL INSTITUTION, THE AUTHORS HAVE SOUGHT TO IDENTIFY THOSE INMATE CHARACTERISTICS WHICH INDICATE SUSCEPTIBILITY TO RIOT PARTICIPATION.
Abstract
SPECIFICALLY, DATA WERE DRAWN FROM INSTITUTIONAL RECORDS AND A POST-RIOT INVESTIGATION CONDUCTED BY THE PRISON ADMINISTRATION. TWO HUNDRED AND SIXTY PARTICIPANTS CLASSIFIED AS LEADERS OR FOLLOWERS, AND A CONTROL GROUP OF 267 NON-PARTICIPANTS WERE STUDIED. ALTHOUGH THE INMATE POPULATION WAS ONE THIRD BLACK, 44 PERCENT OF THE FOLLOWERS AND 54 PERCENT OF THE LEADERS IN THE RIOT WERE BLACK. FOR PART TWO OF THIS ARTICLE, SEE NCJ-26727.
