This document describes some innovations in law enforcement, crime prevention, and corrections in Israel.
Abstract
In June 2001, the Ministry of Public Security’s National Crime Prevention Council completed a 2 week intensive training on crime participation. The course included such subjects as crime auditing and crime mapping, and the use of technologies in crime prevention. The Division for the Advancement of the Status of Women in the Civil Service appointed 80 Women’s Status Coordinators to represent its aims and interests in every ministry and subordinate agency. Coordinators will be provided with training on all issues relating to women’s status, equality of opportunity, and empowerment. Coordinators are to see that the Sexual Harassment Act is properly implemented within their agency. In March 2001, a conference was held on “Policing a Multicultural Society,” where various problems were presented on the special conditions police have to face when dealing with different religious, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds. One of the main points revealed in this gathering of researchers was the resemblance of law enforcement problems around the world. The Border Guard is a specialized arm of the Israel Police that handles all aspects of internal security, including combating terrorism, securing borders, and handling public order disturbances. Operations include a SWAT Unit, Undercover and Detective Units, Special Riot Control Unit, and Bomb Disposal. The Dror Unit is a small specialist force whose task is to stop drugs being smuggled into prisons and to detect any that do get through. The Israeli Prison Service Employment Service provides prisoners gainful employment and vocational training. The goals of the service are to provide security, education and rehabilitation, economics, and commercial environment. Hermon is a correctional institution specializing in rehabilitation therapies, mainly for drug abusers. Drama therapy is used, combining psychotherapy with the therapeutic aspects of drama and theater to enable patients to cope better with their inner problems and interpersonal relations. The Havaya Plus Project for Prisoners’ Families supports and strengthens the prisoner’s home and family by teaching parenting skills and focusing on very young children.
