Annotation

Israel's efforts to prevent and control crime include legislation for the promotion of crime prevention, the development of an integrated strategy, creation of umbrella organizations to facilitate national activity, mobilization of the public for voluntary action in crime prevention, and the use of international activity to further crime prevention and control activities.

Abstract

In Israel about 80 percent of all crimes reported to the police are property crimes that involve legislation concerning vehicle crime as well as the licensing of businesses, enforcing building regulations, and using the vehicle registration system. Israel's innovative approach to crime prevention incorporates legislation, advertising, education, and the promotion of grassroots volunteer action. Both the National Council for Crime Reduction and the Anti-Drug Authority were established to promote crime prevention activity on a nationwide scale. Only an integrated national strategy that involves voluntary action, legislation, research and development, and international cooperation can effectively deal with the rising level of crime and the public's demand for law enforcement services.
