THE ROLE OF THE CORONER IN A CONTEMPORARY URBAN SYSTEM OF JUSTICE IS EVALUATED BY A REVIEW OF 221 INQUESTS CONDUCTED IN CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
Abstract
SERIOUS PROBLEMS AS TO THE EFFICACY AND CONSTITUTIONALITY OF THE CORONER SYSTEM IN COOK COUNTY ARE RAISED, AND SEVERAL POSSIBLE MEANS OF REFORM ARE EXPLORED. THE FINDINGS ALSO QUESTION THE RECENT COURT DECISIONS WHICH ASSERT THAT THE INQUEST IS NOT A CRITICAL STAGE OF THE CRIMINAL PROCEEDINGS IN WHICH THE ACCUSED'S RIGHTS ARE SUBSTANTIALLY AFFECTED.
