This paper describes a project to provide recognized vocational qualifications and “throughcare” employment assistance to pre-release offenders.

Abstract

The Karnet Training Project offers sustainable employment for offenders nearing release into the community. It provides training for offenders working in the abattoir at Karnet Prison Farm. They are registered in nationally recognized traineeships in Meat Processing, and thus their unit completions and qualifications are portable. Trainees develope a good work ethic, have heightened levels of responsibility and commitment, and have a more positive attitude to their work. They regard the training as worthwhile on a practical level and also in terms of pathways to further training and potential employment opportunities. The training program has met with approval by student trainees, instructors, the Industry, and prison administrators. Corrections officials are creating a generic skills training program and are considering a proposal that this program, along with occupational health and safety and first aid, be prerequisites for employment in all prison work areas.
