EDITED PAPERS ON A VARIETY OF CRIMINAL JUSTICE ISSUES ARE PRESENTED FROM AN INTERAGENCY WORKSHOP WITH PARTICIPANTS REPRESENTING ALL BRANCHES AND LEVELS OF AMERICAN GOVERNMENT.
Abstract
PAPERS DEALING WITH LAW ENFORCEMENT EXAMINE THE ROLE OF THE SHERIFF IN CONTEMPORARY LAW ENFORCEMENT AND CORRECTIONS, AND FACTORS INFLUENCING THE DISCIPLINING OF POLICE OFFICERS ARE CONSIDERED. THE EXPERIENCES OF A CRIMINAL JUSTICE PROFESSOR IN HIS SHORT-TERM SERVICE AS A POLICE OFFICER IN A HIGH-CRIME AREA ARE ALSO RECOUNTED. PRESENTATIONS FOCUSING ON THE AMERICAN FAMILY EXPLORE THE EXTENT, NATURE, AND REMEDIES FOR VIOLENCE BETWEEN FAMILY MEMBERS; AND APPROACHES THAT CAN COUNTER THE WEAKENING OF THE FAMILY AS A POSITIVE SOCIALIZING INSTITUTION ARE EXAMINED. THE COURTS ARE TREATED IN PAPERS ANALYZING THE RECENT DEVELOPMENT OF THE UNITED STATES SUPREME COURT, DISCUSSING PROPOSED STANDARDS RELATING TO DELINQUENT BEHAVIOR IN THE JUVENILE JUSTICE SYSTEM, AND EXAMINING LAWYERS' HANDLING OF WITNESSES IN TRIALS. ADDRESSES BEARING UPON CORRECTIONS CONSIDER THE VALUES OF COMMUNITY-BASED CORRECTIONS AS EVIDENCED IN DES MOINES, IOWA, AND LONDON, ENGLAND; LIKELY POSITIVE BENEFITS OF CORRECTIONAL GUARD UNIONS; AND THE USE OF VOLUNTEERS IN CORRECTIONS, AS WELL AS OTHER AREAS OF CRIMINAL JUSTICE. OTHER PAPERS CONSIDER PRESS RELATIONS, CITIZEN RESPONSIBILITY IN SOCIAL CONTROL, A CRITIQUE OF RECENT MASSIVE FEDERAL CRIMINAL JUSTICE FUNDING, A STUDY OF THE THINKING AND PERSPECTIVES OF THE HABITUAL CRIMINAL, AND A CONGRESSMAN'S VIEW OF CRIMINAL JUSTICE AND CRIME. FOR INDIVIDUAL ENTRIES, SEE NCJ 66184-91. (RCB)
