Abstract
A DESCRIPTION OF THE NEW YORK PUBLIC LIBRARY TELLS HOW IT PROVIDES SERVICES TO 11 CORRECTIONAL INSTITUTIONS IN MANHATTAN, THE BRONX, STATEN ISLAND, AND RIKERS ISLAND, AND SERVES A TOTAL INMATE POPULATION OF 6,000. LIBRARY SERVICE TO THE DEAF IS PROVIDED TO STUDENTS AT ST. MARY'S SCHOOL FOR THE DEAF IN BUFFALO, N.Y., THROUGH A CAREFULLY DESIGNED STORYTELLING PROGRAM WHICH USES TOTAL COMMUNICATION, INCLUDING SPEECH, SPEECHWRITING, GESTURES, SIGNING, FINGERSPELLING, READING, WRITING, MEDIA, AND THE UTILIZATION OF RESIDUAL HEARING THROUGH THE USE OF HEARING AIDS. MEDICAL DIRECTORIES AND OTHER MEDICAL REFERENCES SHOULD BE AVAILABLE TO MEDICAL PATIENTS AT ALL PUBLIC LIBRARIES, CONTENDS ANOTHER ARTICLE, IN ORDER THAT PEOPLE HAVE NEEDED INFORMATION ON HOSPITALS AND PHYSICIANS TO ENABLE THEM TO MAKE INTELLIGENT EVALUATIONS CONCERNING THEIR OWN HEALTH NEEDS. ANOTHER TYPE OF IMPORTANT INSTITUTIONAL LIBRARY SERVICE IS THAT PROVIDED TO CORRECTIONAL FACILITIES. COORDINATION OF LIBRARY SERVICES IN NEW YORK STATE PRISONS, CREATION OF A LIBRARY'S IDENTITY WITHIN A CORRECTIONAL FACILITY, PROVISION OF SERVICES BY THE BUFFALO AND ERIE COUNTY PUBLIC LIBRARY TO PRISONERS AND OTHER INSTITUTIONAL INMATES, AND FUNCTIONS OF THE BEDFORD HILLS CORRECTIONAL FACILITY LIBRARY AND ARE ALL DESCRIBED IN SEPARATE ARTICLES. ALSO DISCUSSED ARE HOW LIBRARIES CAN PROVIDE THERAPY TO PSYCHICATRIC PATIENTS BY WIDENING THEIR HORIZONS AND BY HELPING TO REINTEGRATE THEM INTO THE COMMUNITY.
