Abstract
A LIST OF STANDARDS FOR INMATE PROGRAMS EMPHASIZES IMPLEMENTING INSTITUTIONAL PROGRAMS OF THE SAME QUALITY AS ANALOGOUS PROGRAMS CONDUCTED WITHIN THE COMMUNITY. EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMMING FOR INMATES SHOULD INCLUDE A COMBINATION OF REMEDIAL AND SPECIAL EDUCATIONAL SERVICES, TOGETHER WITH BASIC ADULT EDUCATIONAL SERVICES. SPECIALIZED MATH, READING LABORATORIES, AND BASIC ADULT EDUCATION GENERAL EQUIVALENCY DIPLOMA PROGRAMS ARE CONSIDERED ESSENTIAL. VOCATIONAL PROGRAMS SHOULD BE PLANNED IN CONJUNCTION WITH SURVEYS OF THE WORK MARKET TO ASSURE RELEVANCY. THE CLUSTER CURRICULUM DESIGN WHICH FOCUSES ON MATH, READING, ANALYSIS, AND VOCATIONAL AREAS IS RECOMMENDED. SOCIAL SERVICES ARE THE FOCAL POINT FOR INTRA-AGENCY PROGRAMMING, AND THE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE SOCIAL SERVICES CASEWORKER ARE DESCRIBED. THE PSYCHOLOGIST RENDERS NOT ONLY AN IMPORTANT PSYCHOMETRIC AND EVALUATIVE FUNCTION, BUT ALSO PROVIDES INDIVIDUAL PSYCHOTHERAPY FOR SPECIAL OFFENDERS. ADDITIONALLY, HIS TRAINING MAKES HIM VALUABLE IN CLINICAL TEAM TREATMENT AND EVALUATION OF INMATES WHO ARE VIOLENT AND MENTALLY DISTURBED. HEALTH CARE SERVICES ARE DESCRIBED, AND IT IS IMPORTANT FOR THEM TO BE BROAD IN RANGE TO FULFILL THE PRIMARY PURPOSES OF SCREENING AND PREVENTION. RELIGIOUS SERVICES PROVIDE GUIDELINES FOR SELF-DISCIPLINE AND LIFE PURPOSE. RECREATIONAL ACTIVITIES ARE CONSIDERED IMPORTANT NOT ONLY AS EMOTIONAL AND PHYSICAL OUTLETS, BUT FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF IMPORTANT CHARACTER TRAITS. SPECIALIZED SERVICES FOR INMATES WITH SPECIAL PROBLEMS ARE ALSO BRIEFLY CONSIDERED, WITH PARTICULAR ATTENTION TO DRUG AND ALCOHOL ABUSE. A BRIEF BIBLIOGRAPHY IS PROVIDED. (RCB)
