This manual is intended to help persons associated with motor vehicle accident investigations detect fraud, including insurance company representatives who routinely examine claims, law enforcement officers who investigate accidents and fraudulent insurance claims, and personal injury attorneys who become involved in insurance fraud.
Abstract
Estimates indicate that about 25 percent or more of all insurance claims for property damage and personal injury involve fraud, and many fraudulent claims are not detected. The manual covers typical fraud scheme scenarios, bodily injury fraud, accident reconstruction and investigation procedures, vehicle damage assessment, vehicle occupant kinetics, pedestrian collisions, photography, defending against fraud, and the dramatic increase in the number of TMJ (temporomandibular joint) cases during the last 5 years. The manual documents the rampant growth of insurance fraud in motor vehicle accident claims and provides practical guidelines for detecting and proving the existence of fraud. Endnotes and figures
