QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS ON THE NATURE, EXTENT, INVESTIGATION, AND PREVENTION OF INSURANCE FRAUD, PARTICULARLY SELF-INFLICTED INJURIES, FRAUDULENT MEDICAL CLAIMS, AND ARSON.
Abstract
INSURANCE FRAUD IS ESTIMATED AT TWO BILLION DOLLARS PER YEAR, JUST IN ARSON AND FRAUDULENT MEDICAL CLAIMS. MANY TYPES OF FRAUD ARE DETECTED THROUGH CAREFUL INVESTIGATION WHICH MIGHT REVEAL A MOTIVE FOR FRAUD (SUCH AS INSURING A MURDER VICTIM PRIOR TO THE MURDER), INCONSISTENCIES (SUCH AS INSURING A PERSON FOR ACCIDENTAL DEATH AFTER THE DEATH), OR OVERINSURANCE (SOME PERSONS INTENT ON FRAUD HAVE TAKEN OUT AS MANY AS 30 INSURANCE POLICIES).
